What makes a city beautiful? Is it the people, the architecture, natural surroundings? Or is it the personal and emotional connections we have with special places in our cities. While some may see a back-alley at night as horrible, you might see it as the most beautiful place on a busy morning. Train stations can be annoying and crowded when you pass through them while traveling, but if you visit them on a Sunday they can be wonderful spaces. We asked our citizens their most beautiful spot in town. We’re also curious about your favorite place. Let us know!

Borre Akkersdijk -Paris

Spring sun in Paris is always amazing. I love to picnic in one of the many amazing parks in this city. Unfortunately after 9 PM all the nice big parks close. Except for one if you know which entrance you have to take. At 9 PM, people will queue up in front of the gate of Parc des Buttes Chaumont at the cross of Rue Manin and rue de Crimee. When you get in and walk in to the park you will not only have an amazing view of the city but you will also find a really nice bar called Rosa Bonheur. On the website it says it’s a restaurant but I know better! I had amazing evenings there…

Frank Nitty – Tokyo

Hidden away in the corner of a backstreet in the centre of Tokyo’s Shibuya ward, there is a little door. Next to this door in little letters it says: ‘Trump Room’. Going through this door feels like entering the secret bunny hole of the Alice in Wonderland story. Trump Room is a club/bar that is best described as Louis Quatorze ca. 1700 meets the tragically hip of 2013. The interior of this place is so over the top decadent that its almost impossible to call it ‘beautiful’. But the real beauty of this place is that unlike most European or American ‘hipster’ clubs this place has a very ‘welcome’ atmosphere to anyone looking for a fun night out in the city.

Sabine de Witte -Barcelona

My favourite place in Barcelona is the famous café Zurich at Plaça Catalunya. I visit Zurich every time I stay in Barca, but in summertime this place is the best. It’s a perfect mix of tourists and locals, formal service and Spanish culture, which inspires and motivates me. I love to grab a coffee in the morning sun, watch the people rushing around the metro station. Have lunch in the shadow after a shopping spree or a quick drink to refresh when I’m cycling to a customer. Café Zurich is the center of buzzing Barcelona and gives me the energy the city breaths.

Wesley Verhoeve – New York City

The most beautiful place in one of the most amazing cities in the world? Hmm, well if I tell you I might have to kill you, just to avoid it being overrun by tourists. Or you can promise not to tell anyone. Cool? Cool. Ok, so it’s Governor’s Island, a tiny island between Brooklyn and Manhattan that is only accessible for 5 months out of the year, and only by ferry. Formerly a military base, and permanently stuck in the 1930/40/50’s. Beautiful empty houses, big lovely empty meadows to laze around on and picnic, streets to ride your bike on, and peaceful, quiet skies. Please don’t tell….
