On citizenMag’s 5th edition we focus on beauty. What exactly is beauty? We like to believe that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ because it celebrates the fact that everybody has a different opinion about it. Joachim Baan, designer and cross-multidisciplinary thinker, gives his thoughts on beauty from a fascinating array of angles.

THE BEAUTIFUL ISSUE

Fellow citizens, welcome to our world online! Read our quarterly online magazine and navigate your way through cities, books, hotels and more. We are your tour guide for today and the day after, and after, and after… Please do return!
What makes a city beautiful? Is it the people, the architecture, natural surroundings? Or is it the personal and emotional connections we have with special places in our cities. While some may see a back-alley at night as horrible, you might see it as the most beautiful place on a busy morning. Train stations can be annoying and crowded when you pass through them while traveling, but if you visit them on a Sunday they can be wonderful spaces. We asked our citizens their most beautiful spot in town. We’re also curious about your favorite place. Let us know!

We’re really excited about Augmented Reality (AR). Especially how it interlaces with everyday life. By layering additional visual information over the naked eye’s view of the city, it’s almost like a new urban landscape. Yolande Kolstee from the international acclaimed AR Lab in the Netherlands is an advocate for augmented reality as a sense making mechanism for culture, cities and the world. She gives us a small crash-course which fills our visual appetite.
In the spirit of the season, what better way start the new year by awe-inspiring affordable luxury items.
It doesn’t matter if you are the half full or half empty type, we need it: water. It’s the source of life, our treasure against dehydration during traveling and very much needed in between drinking alcohol (let’s hope we wont forget it next time). Amsterdam’s famous water resource is Jan Willem Bakker, owner of De Waterwinkel (Water Shop). A true water sommelier who thinks of water as the beauty elixir of life. He reveals why water is so precious. Since our quest for beauty is a never ending story, let’s put a spotlight on this invisible liquid. Drink up!
