Tourists cool off in fountains, a rooftop bar draws in partygoers, crowded parks with sizzling barbecues. Summer in the city! The city is an open-air playground to be lazy and electric at the same time. citizenM welcomes travelers all over the world to celebrate this sunny period around the world. This summer we asked our citizens what they’re up to. And we added some tips and ideas too, but we’re more curious how you spent your summer. Let us know!
Edial Dekker -Berlin
The BrezelBar is a hidden bar in Kreuzberg in Berlin. Located just a block away from the Bergmanstrasse, the owner of the bar has set a very clear goal in life: making the best Brezels in town. Friendly service, a nice atmosphere and a wide range of brezels make it the perfect place for lunch or breakfast. Not to forget the Chesterfield sofa’s and the free Wi-Fi that is available. Be sure to ask for the stamps when you pay, because you will come back for more in the near future.

Paint a roadway
On Sundays in São Paulo, an aging roadway called the Elevado Costa e Silva – also known as the Minhocão (big worm) – is closed to traffic and used by city dwellers as a linear urban park. On these Sunday jaunts, Paulistanos are enjoying the freedom of a car-free higway and walk, ride bicycles, hang around, eat and dance. Artist and photographer Felipe Morozini did something totally different: he got 30 people including 8 photographers, 4 video makers and 30kg of chalk to draw 75 flowers on the asphalt in 15 minutes to produce a documentary. Please let this inspire you to do something spectacular too this summer!
Martin Pyper -Amsterdam
Genuinely interesting design exhibitions are scarce, especially in the summer, my tip for the summer of 2010 is Boom! From now running till early October at the ’special collections’ exhibition space of Amsterdam University. It’s an overview exhibition of ‘Irma Boom‘ Dutch designer and one of the world’s best book designers with a vast array of her work, rejected designs, sketches and the smallest catalogue you’ve ever seen. A must-see for designers and book lovers, big or small.

Lisa Swart -Cape Town
My life in Cape Town revolves pretty much around the foot of Table Mountain. A TV station, production companies and art schools supply this area with a steady flow of hipsters and creatives. Vida E café is for cappuccinos and people spotting. At Gururamdas studio catch a class of Kundalini yoga and browse Shirley Fintz’s vintage clothes and unique necklaces. Then take a two-minute drive to Camps Bay and soak up the last remaining bit of sunshine while contemplating yet another picture perfect sunset.

Len Hulsbos - Amsterdam
Looking for a swim and a beer in Amsterdam? Blijburg (literally translates to HappyVille) is your place. For a quiet park, go to Rembrandtpark. Looking at the sunset enjoying nice food and a cold beverage? Noorderlicht is where you wish to be it also takes you a ferry ride to get there, which is always nice. See you around! Peace, Len.

Ciclovia in Bogota-Colombia: Every Sunday
Ever dreamt about cycling a motor way in your crowded city? In Bogota, Colombia, it’s possible. For seven hours every Sunday the city closes down over 70 miles of streets to cars. About a million people take part in this “Ciclovia” (translate to English as “bike path”) each week. Check out a great video made by StreetFilms in NYC (hyperlink: http://www.streetfilms.org/ciclovia/) that shows how residents ride bikes, walk, run, skate, do aerobics, picnic, and mingle with family, neighbors & strangers. Bogota, a city of seven million people, has no seasons so this is not only possible during summer but the whole year!
Other summer festivities around the world
30th August La Tomatina: a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. Tens of metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets in exactly one hour. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest.
Mid September: Oktoberfest in Germany in which beer is drunk in quantities so huge that it would take one person 2.456 years to finish it all off.
Late July: Esala Perahera (the festival of the tooth) is the grand festival of Esala held in Sri Lanka. This Buddha’s tooth is celebrated with fire-eating, whip-cracking and a hundred costumed elephants.
