A glittering cone atop a prominent statue. Bizarrely-dressed citizens on the streets. A huge ‘help yourself’ wall of badges. Glasgow’s introduction to the world of citizenM has been as quirky, innovative and exuberant as our hotels. We picked the city for our first hotel outside Amsterdam due its independent spirit – and locals embraced just that during a summer of guerilla marketing that had the whole town talking. With our hotel due to open on september 9th, feel free to explore what’s been going on yourself…

Why Glasgow?

It may not be the capital, but Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest, brashest and most buzzing city. When we decided to start opening citizenM across the globe, it was a natural choice for our first foray outside Amsterdam. To a large extent, that’s down to the spirit of the place. Individual, independent and idiosyncratic, it’s somewhere that lives up to our vision: if citizenM was a city, it would be this city.

As Scotland’s greatest author said: “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

Indispensable Glaswegian way to suggest it’s time to go to bed…

Feel free to…

We don’t do normal. Normal hotels bore us; so does normal advertising. So when it came to telling Glaswegians citizenM was coming, we created a load of slightly bonkers stuff. It had locals scratching their heads, then talking about us, until a real buzz swept the city. There was a wall of hundreds of badges on Buchanan Street – passers by were free to help themselves. A statue in the main square woke up one morning with a glittering ‘Feel free’ cone on its head. Pavements were spray cleaned with our logo. And actors strolled the streets dressed as citizenM characters. It was intentionally cryptic and quirky. When people did work out was going on, they were already intrigued. Sounds like a night in our hotel, actually…

We’re on the corner of Hope Street and Renfrew Street, bang in the heart of the city and the theatre district.

Feel Free

‘Feel free’ is a uniquely citizenM attitude: feel free to come and go; feel free to eat when you want… It’s also a spot-on summary of Glasgow’s special vibe. No wonder it’s been the phrase of the summer, as we head towards our latest opening.
